Gantz tells the story of a teenager named Kei Kurono who dies in a train accident and becomes part of a semi-posthumous "game" in which he and several other recently deceased people are forced to hunt down and kill aliens hidden in Japan.
About the Characters and their Roles:
Themes:
- Live - because we don't know when we will die
- Value of Human Lives, One's Life, even a Dog's life
- Value of being Human and how best to live as one (by choice)
Kei, Kato & Ms Melons
15-16 year old Kei Korono dies (violent, bloody and gory death when hit by the train) together with a long lost childhood friend, Kato Masaharu, at the train station while they were trying to save the life of a homeless drunk who fell onto the tracks. Both Kei and Kato are not close as they had drifted apart through the years and lost contact with each other, and they seem to be at the extreme opposites when it comes to decision making. Kato is tall, big sized, kind and helpful while Kei is petite, pessimistic and doesn't see the good in every person. i like that the two characters come to respect, admire and inspire each other's good points and hence, they eventually change to be better, to be less extreme and more like the other. i also like that the creators brought in a 3rd character, a timid, helpless girl, Kei Kishimoto, (Gantz, the alien tucked within the black ball, nicknames her "Miss Melons") - the one character who literally pushes and enables Kei and Kato to change for the better by adopting each other's strengths, outlook and mindsets.
What i like about Gantz and the Story
- i like the honest depiction of human nature
- i like the characters who rise to the occassion
- i like how humans are so flawed and yet still deserve to be saved/rescued (christian outlook perhaps?)
- i like the action and the brutal cruelty that life and death can bring
- i like how creative the setting is - the world is shared by the living/unaware and Gantz world where aliens & dead (or undead) or where the "recently deceased" or "copies" can war/fight
- i like the black humour and Gantz's humour
- i like that they included a dog among the recently deceased team of human fighters
Themes:
- Live - because we don't know when we will die
- Value of Human Lives, One's Life, even a Dog's life
- Value of being Human and how best to live as one (by choice)
- People need people
- How we treat each other
